A glimps into Garnet's life and legacy
Garnet Edgar Bruce was born in Toledo, Ontario, the middle child of Wilfred Bowman Bruce and Mabel Lorretta Bruce.ᅠ He demonstrated an early ability in music and school and was beloved by most who met him.ᅠ He was intelligent and thoughtful and often appeared severe to people who didn`t know him.ᅠ Those who did know him, knew him to have a dry wit and humour.ᅠ Garnet was the loving husband of Norma and father to D., Karen, Wilfred, Nancy (Lokan) and Cynthia (Bruce-Marzenska).ᅠ He had eight grandchildren:ᅠ Elizabeth (Bruce), Emma, David, Ryan (Lokan) and Matthew (Lavigne), Chesha, Zosha, and Izabella (Marzenska).ᅠ He was a talented craftsman who built five violins during his lifetime and could, until towards the end of his life, pick up his cornet with little difficulty.ᅠ Then in 1991, Garnet was diagnosed with Bladder cancer and spent several years battling this disease with courage and valour until his bladder was removed in January of 2005.ᅠ For a few months, it seemed that Garnet was cancer-free.ᅠ Unfortunately, spots were found on his lungs in or around August of 2005.ᅠ A last bout of chemotherapy was unsuccessful and, despite efforts by Garnet to fight the disease, he succumbed on January 16, 2007.ᅠ He is missed and loved by all who knew him.

My parent's love story would have begun in 1945- just as the war was ending. Norma was invited to Ottawa Tech HS to hear the band. A dapper young man stood to play his solo - Star Dreams. My mother, then 15, heard a voice in her ear, "you're going to marry him!" Norma asked for an introduction, but as he approached, the young girl fled the scene - overtaken by a rare moment of shyness. I can only imagine that dad must have taken notice of the young beauty, as he pursued her 3 years later.

Our mother, Norma Edna Bruce (nee Sims) joined Garnet as of 3:45 am on April 21, 2015. All of their children were able to say goodbye, along with friends and some of her grandchildren. May their love story continue forever!
